GROOMING

The coat of a young kitten tends to be thinner and shorter as compared to that of an adult Maine Coon. The mature Maine Coon has a two-layered coat which is shorter around the shoulder and longer around the underbelly, britches and ruff. Coat type/texture can vary based on the color and/or their ancestral lineage. Some have cottony, high maintenance coats that need daily combing and regular grooming. Others have a silky coat that doesn’t need as much attention. However, regular combing for all coat textures should be started from a kitten age and continued throughout their lives. The Maine Coon loves the attention and grooming, but some find it easier to keep them in a “lion cut” rather than keep up with the daily grooming.

Nails should be trimmed more frequently (once a week) when the Maine Coon is a kitten and less frequently (every 2-3 weeks) as an adult. As with any cat, regular teeth brushing is recommended. Talk to your vet for instructions and suggestions.

I will never put a baby on the table 12-16 weeks is usually the age we would start learning table manners. and here a kitten is never left unattended.  when you are grooming your cat one of the key factors is getting the coat 100% dry. if you do not this will cause mats.  its Also important to note that cats have very very thin skin. so PLEASE USE EXTRA caution ⚠️  when using any grooming tools.

Grooming is introduced to our kittens from 3-4 weeks of age. we start with nail trims and gentle brushing so they get the idea of the brush being around them and touching them.  We also use the opportunity to use the dryer to get ready and that helps socialize them to the sounds of a dryer. they are less likely to panic already hearing the sound. in this video you can see there is no sings of stress. we work very hard in the upbringing of our babies.

It is so vital to make sure your Kitten grows up understanding that grooming is a part of life. It MUST be done. The main goal is to prevent unnecessary STRESS. Maine Coons coats are high maintenance and I cannot talk about it enough.

Products I HIGHLY  Recommend

I have been using BEST SHOT for several years now and really enjoy their products. if you go to their website they do have different lines. This one here I use for regular grooming maintenance and it always leaves my babies coats very silky. Also this product does better when it is diluted also giving you even more washes for the price. but if you are having a specific coat issue just reach out to me and we can find the correct shampoo and conditioner for your babies coat needs.

there are many mixing bottles that you can buy but these are the ones that I have and I have not had any issues with them.

of all the Grooming tools I've used this is one of my favorite brushes to use before, during, and after. it also helps pull the undercoat out with little effort and it will help manage tangled hair that is in the beginning stages of matting. it is an expensive brush but the quality is what matters the knock offs of this brush have very sharp pins and it can scratch your cats skin.

nail cutters come in all different sizes. these are fairly small as I have tiny hands but after clicking on the photo and going to the link it will bring you to an option of choosing a bigger size. I do like these clippers because they are very sharp and the quality lasts a really long time.

I am in Love with this product!! it is safe around the eyes and it also is leaving a light scented blueberry smell on their face so when they come in and give you kisses its a very plesent smell.

it is very important to keep an eye on your Cat/Kittens ear health. this can be one of the first signs you can see before your kitten shows signs of being sick. It's also good having clean ears and removing the dirty ear wax buildup. I do only suggest using a cotton swab and using it only on the outer layer of the ear. do not stick anything down inside the ear as it can damage the ear drums.

when it comes to drying I love this brush, it helps separate the hair resulting in the drying faster. I also like this brush as the pins are very soft and does not scratch the skin. it is important to make note that some pins will scratch and cut your cats skin.

when it comes to home grooming just know going the easy route or the cheapest will only cause you to spend more money in the end. I have learned my lesson over the years on finding products that work for all of my cats. Sometimes it's best not to cut corners. I have this dryer and I absolutely love it . you can also purchase a stand that it can mount to leaving you hands free to groom your cats coat. This dryer is on the cheaper end but the quality of this dryer is expected to last you 10-15 years.

I Recommend this if your Cat/Kitten. has white in their coat. this will help reduce or remove the staining in the coat. you can use it directly onto the coat or it can be diluted. please read the instructions for the correct useage.

This will be YOUR SAVING GRACE!! If you cannot put this comb through your cats coat all the way to the skin and down to the end of the coat then your cat needs more pre work. to prevent mats it is 100% MUST that you have this in your grooming kit.

This tool should only be used if necessary. cats have very thin skin and one small slice can cause a need for an emergency visit for stitches. but this is one of the best and safest tools to use when the coat does mat and you can't get it to release with the comb. BUT NEVER EVER USE SCISSORS OR ANY kind of tool that can slip and slice open the skin.
